It is a primary requirement for equipping Sacred Seals, which are used to cast incantations. Weapons in Elden Ring have a minimum Stat requirement that needs to be met before the weapon can be wielded.
It took a lot of leveling and working with stats but I settled into a sword sorcery melee mage build. Carian slicer is your primary melee, uses less FP than Carian pebble, and will shred enemies.
